The Chicago Bears submitted formal requests to interview Arizona Cardinals offensive coordinator Drew Petzing as well both coordinators from the Detroit Lions, NFL Network reported Monday.
The Bears (5-12) fired head coach Matt Eberflus on Nov. 29 after a 4-8 start.
The Bears put in requests to interview Lions OC Ben Johnson and DC Aaron Glenn, per the report. Both are expected to attract multiple interviews this offseason. The Lions garnered the No. 1 seed in the NFC playoffs.
NFL Network also reported that the Bears are requesting interviews with Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy, Minnesota Vikings DC Brian Flores, Giants OC Mike Kafka, Baltimore Ravens OC Todd Monken, Pittsburgh Steelers OC Arthur Smith and Miami Dolphins DC Anthony Weaver.
Chicago snapped a 10-game losing streak and picked up its first win under interim coach Thomas Brown with a season-ending 24-22 victory at Green Bay on Sunday. Bears general manager Ryan Poles said Sunday that Brown, who started the season as the passing game coordinator, will also get an interview.
"It was challenging," Brown said Monday, "but I learned a lot about myself this year."
Brown said he is confident Poles learned more about him by watching him run the team than he could articulate in an interview.
Petzing, 37, just completed his second season as the offensive coordinator under Arizona head coach Jonathan Gannon.
The Cardinals (8-9) missed the playoffs but finished 12th in the NFL in scoring (23.5 points per game) and 11th in total offense (358.2 yards per game).
Petzing previously worked as an assistant coach with the Cleveland Browns (2013, 2020-22) and Vikings (2014-19), crossing over with current Bears president Kevin Warren in Minnesota.
McCarthy, 61, completed his fifth season with the Cowboys, going 7-10 and missing the playoffs for a second time -- both marked by season-ending injuries to quarterback Dak Prescott.
He is 49-35 in the regular season and 1-3 in the playoffs with the Cowboys. His contract expires Wednesday, but the Cowboys have exclusive negotiating rights with him through Jan. 14. McCarthy said he wants to return to Dallas while owner Jerry Jones has not committed to retaining him.
McCarthy was head coach of the Green Bay Packers for nearly 13 full seasons, getting fired after Week 13 in 2018. His Packers were 125-77-2 in the regular season and 10-8 in the postseason, including the Super Bowl championship in the 2010 season.
Kafka, 37, has been the OC for Brian Daboll in New York since 2022. He previously worked under Andy Reid as the Kansas City Chiefs' QBs coach and passing game coordinator.
Flores, 43, has been the Vikings' defensive coordinator for two seasons after serving as linebackers coach and senior defensive assistant with Pittsburgh in 2022.
He was with the New England Patriots since the 2004 season as a scouting assistant, pro scout and assistant coach through 2018 before three years as the Miami Dolphins' head coach. His Miami teams went a combined 24-25 and did not make the playoffs.
Smith, 42, also has NFL head coaching experience from 2021-23 with the Atlanta Falcons, who went a combined 21-30 with no postseason berths.
An NFL assistant since 2007, Smith rose through the ranks with the Tennessee Titans to become the offensive coordinator in 2019-20.
Weaver, 44, is in his first season as defensive coordinator with the Dolphins. He was a position coach on that side of the line with the New York Jets (2012), Buffalo Bills (2013), Cleveland Browns (2014-15) and Houston Texans (2016-19) before becoming the Texans' DC in 2020.
The Baltimore Ravens hired him as defensive line coach and defensive run game coordinator in 2021, then as DL coach and associate head coach in 2022-23.
Monken, 58, is in his second season as the Ravens' offensive coordinator. He also as an OC with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2016-18) and Browns (2019), and he coached wide receivers for the Jacksonville Jaguars (2007-10).
Many years of experience at the college level included three seasons as a head coach at Southern Miss (13-25 record from 2013-15) and OC and quarterbacks coach at Georgia (2020-22).
