League: Cricket
On a memorable day for cricket, the South Delhi Superstarz rewrote the record books in the Delhi Premier League (DPL) T20 2024 on Saturday (August 31), with breathtaking performances from Priyansh Arya and Ayush Badoni. The match against the North Delhi Strikers at the Arun Jaitley Stadium will be remembered as a milestone in T20 cricket history.
Badoni’s innings was nothing short of spectacular. After the early loss of Sarthak Ray in the third over, Badoni, along with Arya, took charge of the innings. Badoni went on to score an astounding 165 runs off just 55 balls. His innings included 27 boundaries, of which 19 were sixes, setting a new record for the most sixes hit by an Indian batter in a T20 innings. This incredible performance saw Badoni surpass Shreyas Iyer‘s previous record of 147 runs, which he had set in 2019. Badoni’s 165 is now the highest individual score by an Indian in T20 cricket.
While Badoni was setting records, Arya was not far behind. Arya scored a blistering 120 runs off 50 balls, with a strike rate of 240. However, what truly set his innings apart was his feat of hitting six sixes in a single over. This achievement placed him in an elite group of cricketers, making him only the second Indian after Yuvraj Singh to accomplish this rare feat. Arya’s six-hitting spree came in the 12th over of the match against Manan Bhardwaj, further cementing his place in T20 history.
The partnership between Badoni and Arya was nothing short of extraordinary. Together, they put up a mammoth 286 runs for the second wicket, shattering the previous record for the highest partnership in T20 cricket. The previous record of 258 runs was held by Japan‘s Lachlan Yamamoto-Lake and Kendel Kadowaki-Fleming, set against China in February 2024. The South Delhi duo’s partnership was instrumental in propelling their team to a massive total of 308/5.
With a total of 308/5, the South Delhi became the first Indian team to score over 300 runs in a T20 match. This total now stands as the second-highest in the history of T20 cricket, just seven runs short of the all-time record of 314/3, held by Nepal against Mongolia in the 2023 Asian Games. The South Delhi innings featured a remarkable 31 sixes, breaking the previous record of 26 sixes in a single T20 match, a record held by Nepal.
