An American will be in the Berlin Open final, but the identity won't be known until Sunday as per whether it will be No. 1 seed Coco Gauff or No. 4 Jessica Pegula, after their semifinal match was called due to rain. Pegula was leading the match 7-5, 6-6 (3) when play was suspended. The match is expected to resume Sunday.

The eventual winner of that match will face Russian Anna Kalinskaya, who advanced with two wins on Saturday. First, she moved on when No. 2 seed Aryna Sabalenka retired down 5-1 in the first set of their quarterfinal match due to a shoulder injury. It was the first time the 26-year-old Sabalenka of Belarus has retired from a tour-level event in her career.

Kalinskaya later posted a 6-1, 6-7 (3), 6-1 victory over Victoria Azarenka of Belarus in the semifinals.

Earlier in the day, in a delayed quarterfinal match, No. 8 Ons Jabuer retired due to illness after losing the first set 7-6 (9) to Gauff.

Unseeded Australian Ajla Tomljanovic continued her unexpected run by beating seventh-seeded Anastasia Potapova 7-6 (5), 6-4 to advance to the final in Birmingham, England.

Although Tomljanovic struggled to convert her break points, finding success on only two of seven chances, she managed to hang on through a tough first set and finish Potapova off in two sets in 90 minutes to reach her first final since 2019 in Thailand. The 31-year-old will be looking for her first career title.

Tomljanovic will try to continue her winning streak when she faces Kazakhstan's Yulia Putintseva, who finished off Italian Elisabetta Cocciaretto 6-2, 6-2. Putintseva fired four aces to just one by Cocciaretto and converted 6 of 10 break-point opportunities.
